Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday announced in the Legislative Assembly that a pro-govinda league, along the lines of the pro-Kabaddi league, will be started in the state.

Eknath Shinde has also announced that the status of sports will be given to the ‘Dahi Handi’ tournaments.

He said that although there has been a delay in the insurance scheme for ‘Govindas’ this year, all of them will be insured next year.

He also announced that the Govinda teams would be treated as sports teams and the prizes for the ‘pro-govinda League’ will be given by the Maharashtra government.

The Maharashtra government had recently announced an insurance scheme of Rs 10 lakh for Govindas, but due to the tournament falling on August 19, all the participants could not be insured.

Dahi handi is a competitive event associated with Krishna Janmashtami, the Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. It is especially popular in the state of Maharashtra and huge cash prizes are announced at local levels with many teams taking part in the competition.

CM Eknath Shinde announced that a Pro-Govinda league will be started in the state on the lines of pro-Kabaddi in the Maharashtra legislative assembly.
