Veteran director of Bengali films and Padma Shri awardee Tarun Majumdar passed away today, June 4, 2022, at the age of 91. Tarun was admitted to the SSKM Government Hospital in Kolkata for a long time, due to age-related ailments.
Tarun Majumdar was put on ventilator support as his health was deteriorating. There is a wave of mourning in the film industry due to the death of Tarun Majumdar. Many artists have paid tribute to him. Tarun Mazumdar made his debut as a director in the film industry in the year 1985, with Basant Choudhary in ‘Alor Pipasha’
He previously worked under the filmmakers’ group ‘Yatrik’, which included Tarun Mazumdar, Dilip Mukhopadhyay and Sachin Mukherjee. After this, the group ‘Yatrik’ separated in the year 1963. Some of Tarun Majumdar’s best films include Balika Badhu (1976), Kuheli (1971), Shriman Prithviraj (1972), Dadar Kirti (1980), Smriti Tuku Thak (1960), Paltak (1963) and Ganadevata (1978).

During the decades of his career, he worked with many legendary actors like Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Chhabi Vishwas, Soumitra Chatterjee and Sandhya Roy. Tarun Majumdar was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. Won five Filmfare Awards including Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
Talking about his films, in the year 2015, Tarun Majumdar said, ‘I have always been influenced by human relationships and values. I think a man’s quest is to become a better person. I think I understand the middle-class environment better.
