A 38-year-old tribal woman has been battling for life with severe burn injuries after three persons allegedly set her on fire over a land dispute in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district. The woman was set on fire by a group of men after encroaching on land that her family got in a government welfare scheme in Madhya Pradesh.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in Dhanoria village under Bamori police station, over 200 km from the state capital Bhopal, Guna Superintendent of Police Pankaj Shrivastava said.

The three men shoot a video after they set her on fire on the field, the woman’s husband told the police.

A video, purportedly shot by the accused, went viral on social media. The person shooting the video was heard saying the woman had torched herself, and let us shoot the video. In the video, the woman can be seen seen crying in pain, with smoke all around her.

The tribal woman from Guna district, Rampyari Saharia, is in hospital in a critical condition, the police said.

District police chief Pankaj Srivastava said the woman’s husband, Arjun Saharia, found her on the field writhing in pain with burn injuries on Saturday.

In his complained to the police, the husband Arjun Saharia said his wife Rampyari Bai was found lying on field with severe burn injuries when he reached his farm on Saturday afternoon.

When the man enquired, his wife told him that she was set on fire by three persons, identified as Pratap, Shyam Kirar and Hanumat, the official said quoting the complainant. The complainant told the police that the accused had forcibly usurped his land, which was freed by the local administration in May this year and handed over to him, he said.

Arjun Saharia, the husband of Rampyari Saharia had also filed a complaint with the local police that he faced death threat from the family of the three men who have been named in the case. He alleged the police haven’t acted on this complaint yet.
