Mandeep Kaur, a 30-year-old Sikh woman from New York, committed suicide on August 3 after suffering domestic abuse from her husband, Ranjodh Singh Sandhu, for close to eight years. She is survived by two daughters, aged four and six, whose custody is currently in the hands of Sandhu.

Kaur posted the video on social media minutes before ending her life, in which she blamed her husband and his parents for her suicide. The horrific news of Mandeep’s death created a stir on social media.

Swati Maliwal, Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, also shared one of Mandeep’s videos on her Twitter account and tagged the Indian Embassy in the US and New York City Police Department Chief Kenneth Corey and requested them to take necessary action against the accused.

Why did Mandeep Kaur end her life?

In a series of videos, Mandeep explains what led her to take her life. Mandeep, showing bruises and blood clots, said her husband has been viciously beating her since they got married, and her in-laws have been encouraging him.

In a viral video, Mandeep said she had tried her best to save the relationship over the past eight years, thinking that the situation would improve someday.

She also accused Sandhu of having extra-marital affairs. She said he would get drunk and beat her up. Sometimes he would beat me even without being drunk and, on top of that, be with other women. I tried to put up with it for my children, she continued.

Registered a police case

In another video, Mandeep revealed that her father had registered a police case against Sandhu but he started begging her to save him. She withdrew the case in order to set everything right, but things went back to square one.

In a video, Mandeep can be heard saying, God will punish everyone. You (her husband and in-laws) all ganged up and left me helpless. I have to leave my kids and go now, she added.

Kids cry horrifically

In another video, Sandhu is seen pulling the woman into a bed and choking her as she calls out for help. Kaur is heard saying, I refuse to take this anymore.

In the same video, her children are crying horrifically and telling their father to not hit mom (Mandeep).

Indians all over the world have been moved by Mandeep’s story. Here is how the people are demanding justice for Mandeep.

The cries of the 4 & 6 yr old asking their father to not hit their mother will stay in my head for a long time.

I’m ashamed to be a part of this society which normalizes patriarchy & domestic abuse in the name of culture & tradition. We all are responsible.#JusticeforMandeep

Heartbreaking news about Mandeep Kaur committing suicide due to domestic violence. Even more devastating to think that she could not share it with anyone and there are probably many others like her suffering in silence. #JusticeForMandeep
