Manchester United and Chelsea could both be in the race for Mathijs De Ligt.
Juventus defender Mathijs de Ligt has told the club he wants to leave this summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea weighing up a transfer approach.
That is according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, which reports that De Ligt has turned down the notion of a contract renewal offer.
The 22-year-old signed for Juventus from Ajax in 2019 after impressing in the Dutch club’s run to the UEFA Champions League final under new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s leadership.
De Ligt was signed in order to help Juventus transition to a new era with its playing squad, but the team has struggled in the past few seasons, and its decade of dominance in Serie A has come to an end.
The last two title have been won by Inter and AC Milan respectively, with Juventus just about hanging on to their position as a Champions League club. With stalwart Giorgio Chiellini moving on to MLS with Los Angeles FC after 18 years in Turin, the time seemed right for De Ligt to lead the Bianconeri’s defence.
But the lack of success Juventus have enjoyed since his arrival has apparently caused De Ligt to want to leave. The report adds that a row broke out between club bosses and De Ligt’s representative Rafaela Pimenta in a meeting to discuss the player’s future which took place in Milan earlier this week, and now Manchester United and Chelsea could look to capitalise on the discontent.
